Big Sur is home to some of the most jaw-dropping coastal views in all of California, if not the entire West Coast. What if I told you there was a hidden spot where you could swing above the clouds while watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean? Read on for the ultimate guide on how to find the secret swing in Big Sur!
PREPARING FOR THE JOURNEY
The rough, unpaved road up to the Big Sur swing is rather steep with plenty of tight turns and deep ruts. Therefore, a high-clearance vehicle with 4×4 is strongly recommended. Only attempt this drive with a properly equipped vehicle. If you get stuck, you’ll be blocking other campers and locals from accessing the road. On one trip, I witnessed a dented sedan that had gotten stuck in a rut and had to be towed by another truck. Don’t be that person.
HOW TO GET THERE
When driving north along Highway 1, turn right onto Plaskett Ridge Road just before Plaskett Creek Campground. Drive approximately 3.2 miles up the one lane dirt road until you reach the summit. As you’re making your way up the steep road, the dust that is kicked up by your tires may prevent you from easily seeing other vehicles in front of you, so you will want to drive slowly. After 15 minutes, you should reach the marked area on the map above, which is where the short hiking trail to the swing begins. Feel free to park in the dirt clearing next to the road. However, you may have to park elsewhere if this particular spot has already been claimed by campers. From the start of the trailhead, it’s a relatively short walk to the swing. After walking downhill for about 5-10 minutes, the tree where the swing is erected will come into view.
DISPERSED CAMPING
The ridge along Plaskett Ridge Road is a hidden mecca for dispersed camping. Along the dusty, windy road are many camping spots with some of the most scenic coastal views in California. The best thing about camping among these hills is that it’s absolutely free! Please remember to follow the Leave No Trace principles. Always pack out what you bring in.

THINGS TO NOTE
- Give yourself adequate time to make it up to the top. Don’t attempt the drive if the road is wet or muddy.
- Sunrise and sunset are optimal times to visit the hidden swing. Even though it may be cloudy or foggy down at the coast, you’ll be able to swing high above the clouds at this spot! When arriving around sunset, keep in mind it may be dark by the time you head back down. If you aren’t comfortable driving in the dark on steep, unpaved roads, you may want to rethink visiting during sunset.
- If you intend to camp along the ridge for the night, plan to arrive early to ensure a good spot. There are plenty of secluded spots in the area. The popular ones, however, tend to be quickly claimed. Expect high traffic on the weekends, even in the winter.
- Purchase and print your California campfire permit. Campfire permits are required on federally controlled lands in order to use portable stoves. Campfires are NOT permitted in these areas.
